Pests are pests, and the only thing you may want to know about them is that they should stay out of your home. No one will dispute that, and any pest infestation should be dealt with accordingly.
Regardless of how you feel about pests in general, there are some interesting facts and myths about them and some fascinating things that you may not know.
Rats Caused the Black Plague
This myth is one of the most common misconceptions about the Black Plague. Rats played a part in spreading this disease, but the real culprits were the fleas that lived on the rats.
The fleas carried the bacteria, which infected anyone they bit. The rats carried the fleas around on their bodies, but they did not transmit the disease directly.
Spiders Are Bad
Too many spiders in one place can be bad, and if you are allergic to spider bites, that might be a double whammy. But the reality is that spiders are good, and healthy homes should have a spider or two lurking around.
Why? Because spiders are nature’s insect pest management. Spiders eat other bugs that could turn into pests if left unchecked, so having a spider or two around is a good thing.
Cats Keep Rats and Mice Away
As you may know, cats are predators, and because they are carnivorous, they might like nothing better than to dine on a rat or a mouse. The problem is that rats and mice don’t live out in the open where your cat is. They generally hide as much as possible during the day and only come out when they are hungry and thirsty, which is usually at night.
Unfortunately, no matter how many cats you have, rats and mice are not going to be deterred if there is food and water to be had. They will take their chances, hiding where cats can’t get to them during the day so that they can sneak out at night and get a bite to eat.
Carpenter Ants Eat Wood
This myth is around because termites, another wood boring insect, actually eat wood for nutritional value. Carpenter ants just burrow through wood in which to nest and don’t consume it.
Because carpenter ants don’t eat wood, they have to dispose of it somewhere as they tunnel through it. Piles of wood shavings, much like those that come from sharpening a pencil, beneath wooden items like wood piles and around wooden studs or wooden siding, can be evidence of a carpenter ant infestation.
