Prevent Birds from Nesting Outside Home or Office
Birds may make for some lovely entertainment when on an outdoor hike; however, they can become a major nuisance once they begin to build their nests outside of your home or office. Not only are bird nests messy, but most species of birds are also protected by federal laws that prohibit removal of their active nests. Therefore, your best line of defense is to prevent the nests from being built in the first place. Here, are the top ways to stop birds from building their nests near your home or office so that you can avoid this common nuisance.
Create a Barricade
Birds love out of the way places, such as porch eaves and chimneys, for building their nests. Often, these areas can be blocked off so that birds do not have access. If possible, use wood, or another solid material, to build a barricade. Chimneys are another favorite space for birds that can be capped at the end of the winter season to prevent spring birds from building their nests.
Install Bird Netting
In areas where a solid barricade may not be feasible, such as in a garden or over an outdoor decoration, bird netting can be used. If bird netting would be unsightly, then consider threading fishing line or black wires around the nesting area. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, birds are deterred by wires, and they can be included in many outdoor displays without detracting from the aesthetics of your décor.
Fake a Predator
In addition to disliking wire, birds are constantly on the lookout for predators that may invade their nests. Therefore, you can fake them out using toys snakes or a plastic owl. Simply place your fake predator in any space where a bird might seek shelter, and they will move on to somewhere else that they deem to be safer.
It is important to be proactive when deterring birds from building their nest, lest they get one step ahead and set up a residence that you are federally mandated not to remove. Whether you choose a bird net, fake snake or a combination of methods, be sure to barricade every possible nesting place to keep your building free from nests.
