Preventing Rat Problems

preventing rat problems in the city is difficult due to their ubiquityIn the city, rat infestations are common and pose a threat to the health and safety of those who live or work in a building. Known for spreading dangerous diseases, rats frequently take up residence in a building out of a need for food, water and shelter. Reducing these three things is an excellent first step toward preventing rat infestations. For those who would rather prevent an infestation than battle a building full of rats, here are a few more ways to tackle preventing rat problems.

Reduce Clutter and Contain Trash

Rats are often found in the attic or garage where they find piles of clutter in which they can build a nest. Therefore, reducing clutter can help prevent rat problems by eliminating their options for nesting. Additionally, rats are drawn to food and will climb into trash cans or even enter a home when searching for food. Putting trash in a lidded container will stop rats from finding a food source in the neighborhood. It is also important to note that rats love pet food, so it is important to avoid feeding outdoor animals late at night when rats tend to roam.

Maintain the Building’s Exterior

Rats are intelligent critters that will scout out entry-points along a building’s exterior. The New York City Department of Mental Health and Hygiene warns that rats can fit into cracks as tiny as one-half an inch. Therefore, it is essential to seal any cracks and holes along the outside walls, windows and doors of a building. If an area cannot be sealed completely, then using heavy-duty mesh wire can block a rat’s entrance.

Schedule Seasonal Inspections

Even with the best of efforts, rat infestations may still occur. Generally, rats invade a building during seasonal changes when they may seek shelter from extreme weather conditions such as snow or the heat. Having a building inspected seasonally will help to identify possible rat invasions before they become a serious infestation that requires rat removal services.

Preventing rat infestations is best achieved through the use of proper sanitation and maintenance around a building along with regular inspections. By eliminating food and water sources that attract rats and blocking their entry-points, a person can effectively prevent rats even when living in a busy city.
