Termite Prevention
When it comes to household pests, termites are one insect that can send property owners into a state of panic and for a good reason. A termite infestation can quickly spiral out of control and cause thousands of dollars’ worth of structural damage in a short period of time. For those who are concerned about termites near their property, here are a few tips that can help prevent termites from invading your property.
Identifying an Infestation
During swarming season, it can be fairly simple to identify an infestation; however, many people mistake termites for ants. A simple way to tell termites apart from ants is to examine their body. Termites will have wings that are of equal length, while ants will have two sets of wings with one longer than the other. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, termites can also be identified by looking for mud tubes that contain tiny white insects. A person may also probe wood with a screwdriver to look for hollow spots.
Practice Preventative Maintenance
There are several things that property owners can do to maintain the structure of their home in a way that will be less attractive to termites. To do so, all a person needs to do is eliminate a termite’s access to wood, moisture and shelter. Ohio State University explains in their fact sheet that all wooden parts of a home’s foundation should be placed at least six inches above the soil to make it harder for termites to access. Additionally, keeping brush and mulch away from the home can keep termites from transferring to the building.
Types of Treatment Methods
In addition to preventative maintenance, a person may need to explore their termite treatment options. This is especially important for those who have discovered an infestation because termites can spread quickly. Generally, a combination of methods may be used. For example, a barrier may be erected to prevent termites from accessing the building while pesticides may be used to eliminate the termites that may already be present. By being proactive and eliminating an infestation early, a person’s property can be protected against the damage caused by termites.
